Moving fraud warning signs to check before booking

One unusual term does not prove fraud, but several warning signs together should trigger direct verification before you pay.

Warning signs in the sales process

  • The company will not provide its legal name or USDOT number.
  • The estimate is provided without a meaningful survey of the shipment.
  • You are pressured to pay immediately or lose the price.
  • A large deposit is requested by cash, wire transfer, payment app, or another difficult-to-reverse method.
  • The company asks you to sign incomplete or blank documents.
02

Warning signs in the paperwork

  • The company name on the estimate does not match the official record or payment recipient.
  • The estimate does not say whether it is binding or non-binding.
  • Inventory, pickup, delivery, cancellation, storage, or additional-charge terms are missing.
  • The mover does not provide required consumer information.
  • The contract leaves important prices or services blank.

What to do when something does not match

Pause before paying. Search the mover’s public record, compare names and contact information, ask whether the seller is a broker or carrier, and request corrected documents.

A registration match is evidence of identity and status—not a guarantee of future performance. Use the record together with the written estimate, payment method, complaint information, and direct answers from the mover.
