Moving-company deposit red flags before you pay

Evaluate the deposit as a complete term: amount, recipient, payment method, refund rule, cancellation deadline, and what happens if service is not provided.

01

Deposit terms that deserve another check

  • A large upfront payment before identity and scope are confirmed
  • Cash, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, gift card, or another difficult-to-reverse method
  • Payment to a person or business not identified in the agreement
  • No written refund rule or cancellation deadline
  • Pressure to pay immediately to keep a price or date
  • Different deposit promises in the sales call and written estimate
02

Match the payment recipient

The name receiving the payment should match the disclosed mover or broker, or the relationship should be explained clearly in writing. Request an itemized receipt showing the company, amount, date, purpose, and remaining balance.

If a broker collects the deposit, ask whether it is a brokerage fee, part of the transportation charge, or refundable if a carrier is not assigned.

03

Ask these questions in writing

  1. Is the deposit refundable?
  2. What exact date and time ends the refund period?
  3. Which legal company receives the money?
  4. What happens if pickup cannot be performed in the agreed window?
  5. Can I pay by credit card?
  6. When and how will a refund be issued?
04

Preserve your payment evidence

Keep the estimate, cancellation terms, receipt, payment confirmation, emails, and messages together. If the company changes the terms, request the full revised document before sending additional money.
