Binding versus non-binding moving estimates
The estimate type determines what the quoted amount means and when the amount due can change.
What each estimate means
A binding estimate generally fixes the price for the services and inventory listed in the written estimate. A non-binding estimate is an approximation based on the mover’s estimate of shipment weight and requested services. The final amount may change when actual weight or services differ.
A binding estimate is not unlimited protection. Added items, stairs, long carries, packing, storage, shuttle service, or other work outside the written scope may change the charge.
Details that deserve attention
- The estimate type is clearly labeled.
- The inventory and requested services are complete.
- Pickup, delivery, storage, packing, and access charges are described.
- The payment schedule and amount due at delivery are stated.
- Any changes must be documented before the additional service is performed.
Confirm the price in writing
Ask: “What is the maximum amount I may be required to pay at delivery based on this estimate?” Then ask the mover to identify every condition that could increase that amount.
Do not rely on a sales call summary. Keep the estimate, inventory, order for service, bill of lading, and every signed revision together. If the inventory changes, request an updated written estimate before loading.
